the Fränkischer Hof (built 1938-39), housed the Nazi press corps during the Rallies, and was open to the public otherwise. Exterior decorations included five coats-of-arms shields, one bearing the Eagle and Swastika insignia, by Phillip Widmer. The hotel was extensively remodeled in the 1990s, drastically changing its appearance, and is now the Sheraton Hotel Carlton. The shields were reinstalled on the front wall, including the Nazi emblem with its swastika not completely chipped out.

While in Nürnberg, Hitler stayed at the Deutscher Hof Hotel, near the Bahnhof (train station). He had a large room on the first floor (second floor to Americans) with windows from which he could review marching columns. An addition to the hotel was built in 1936 and afterwards Hitler stayed on this side, which had a special Führer balcony. The building has changed a little but is still easily recognizable, even after a remodeling for luxury apartments in 2014-16

NATO 23 was real! From 1975 - 1979 I was assigned to 3/37 FA, Herzo Base. Periodically, my unit was assigned perimeter & reactionary force guard duty about once per year for 7 days in duration. While deployed there, we were subjected to alerts 24/7. Prior to deployment, we received intense training on the use of deadly force & what to do in the event of exposure to a nerve agent & radiation. While deployed there, we knew this was not a game. No one ever explained to us the contents in the facility. Final note, the NCOIC at that time had the nickname of "the Rat"; sharp as a tack but would rat you out if you were out of order while deployed at his facilty. Anyone who argues whether or not this place existed, there claim can be supported by me.
